RTG program activities are led by a group of UTA Mathematics faculty, in collaboration with researchers from UTA Nursing, Bioengineering, Biology, and Psychology, as well as the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and the VA North Texas Health Care System. All RTG faculty have extensive experience in interdisciplinary teaching, research, and mentoring, working with minorities, and providing students with a global understanding of quality research.

The RTG program engages three vertically integrated RTG cohorts in a long-term interdisciplinary research, education, and mentoring experience in mathematics for human health. Undergraduate students are accepted into the RTG program for two academic years and the summer in between, whereas postdoctoral fellows are trained for three years. Doctoral students spend their first two years in the RTG program as Graduate Research Assistants, while during their remaining years in their doctoral studies at UTA, they are hired as Graduate Teaching Assistants.
