The RTG program invites qualified mathematics undergraduates, doctoral students, and postdoctoral associates to apply for RTG financial support. The long-range goal of the Research Training Groups in the Mathematical Sciences (RTG) program is to strengthen the nation’s scientific competitiveness by increasing the number of well-prepared U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents who pursue careers in the mathematical sciences, be they in academia, government, or industry.
Financial Support:
- Undergraduate students will be accepted in the RTG program for two academic years and the summer in between and provided with a $5,000 summer research stipend.
- Graduate RTG trainees will be provided $34,000 total research stipend per year during the first two years in the RTG program, followed by a graduate teaching assistantship, with 100% of tuition and health insurance covered, for each of the remaining years in their doctoral studies at UTA.
- RTG postdoctoral associates will have a 3-year appointment, paid at the normal full-time rate for UTA, with additional summer support for two summers at the rate of $13,000 per summer, including funding to cover travel, equipment, and supplies.
How to Apply:
Undergraduate students with at least two years remaining to complete their B.S. degree are encouraged to apply for the RTG undergraduate research scholarships, while prospective Ph.D. students are encouraged to apply for the RTG graduate research stipends. Application priority date is December 1. Late applications will be considered only if scholarship funds are still available. Applications to the RTG program must be completed using the RTG Application Form.
Students who are not currently enrolled at the University of Texas at Arlington must apply for admission at https://www.uta.edu/admissions/apply. Awards of RTG scholarships will not be made until the students have been admitted by the University of Texas at Arlington.
Prospective RTG postdoctoral associates are encouraged to apply at: https://www.mathjobs.org.
Requirements*:
In order to qualify for the RTG scholarships, students must be enrolled as a full-time student and pursuing a bachelor’s or doctoral degree in Mathematics at UTA, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 during every semester receiving the scholarship, commit to attend the weekly RTG research seminar, participate in other RTG program activities such as conducting research projects, attending special meetings, and mentoring sessions, and complete a program survey/evaluation form on the RTG program each year.
